Former State Representative & St. Johns County Businessman Travis Hutson Announces Candidacy for Florida Senate District 6

St. Augustine, Fla. – Former State Representative and St. Johns County Businessman Travis Hutson today announced his candidacy for the Florida Senate District 6 Special Election.  Hutson is seeking election to Senate District 6, which consists of Flagler, Putnam, St. Johns and part of Volusia Counties and was recently vacated after Senator John Thrasher was selected to serve as the next president of the Florida State University

“I am excited to announce my candidacy for the Florida Senate,” said Hutson.  “Like the Senators who represented this area before me – Senator John Thrasher and the late Senator Jim King – I hold a deep passion for our Northeast Florida communities and want nothing more than to see our businesses and community members thrive for years to come.”

“Today, I pledge to serve with the same integrity and utmost respect as I did in the Florida House,” said Hutson.  “I also want to thank my family, especially my wife, Tanya, for their continued support and encouragement, as they know how much giving back to our community means to me.  It is with great honor that I embark on this campaign, and I look forward to having an opportunity to serve in the Senate and continue the great legacies that have come before me.”

Prior to announcing his candidacy for Florida Senate District 6, Hutson served as the State Representative for Florida House District 24, where he served Flagler and parts of St. Johns and Volusia Counties since 2012.

“Having represented three of the four counties within Senate District 6 in the Florida House, I feel I am uniquely qualified to serve this district in our state’s Capitol,” said Hutson.  “I already have a working knowledge and understanding of the district and what our slice of Northeast Florida is looking to enhance and accomplish in Tallahassee.”

While serving in the Florida House, Hutson championed crucial legislation for House District 24 and the state, focusing on the economy and public safety. In education, Hutson helped craft enhancements to Florida’s Career and Professional Education Act, responding to Florida’s critical workforce needs. Hutson closed loopholes in the release of sexual violent predators making Northeast Florida’s most vulnerable citizens safer. Also, Hutson improved the water quality in Florida, as he successfully carried Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam’s water policy reform in the Florida House.

Hutson works in his family’s business, assisting in property and agricultural management and local charitable giving.  He also sat on the board of directors for HandsOn Jacksonville and on the development committee for St. Augustine Youth Services and has been a member of the board of directors for EPIC in St. Johns County.  Previously, Hutson was a realtor with Watson Realty. In 2010, Hutson worked for Ambassador John Rood with the Vestcor Companies and specialized in sales and acquisitions, as well as analyzing financial data for incoming and outgoing deals.

Hutson has served on the finance team for a large group of Republican candidates, including, but not limited to, Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA), Governor Rick Scott (R-FL), Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, St. Johns County Sherriff David Shoar, State Attorney R.J. Larizza, State Attorney Angela Corey, Representative Daniel Davis (R-Jacksonville), Clay County Commissioner Travis Cummings, St. Johns County Commissioner Mark Miner and St. Johns County Commissioner Cyndi Stevenson.

Hutson graduated Lafayette College in Pennsylvania in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business.   He resides in St Augustine with his wife, Tanya, and their daughter, Taylor.
